Mixed Method began in February of 2009. Ryan Nilson, a traditional jazz bassist, had begun to develop an ear for electronica, particularly drum & bass. A passion for beat production soon followed. It did not take long before Nilson began wanting to turn the music he was making on his computer into something that could be taken to the stage. He began to make the rounds, calling contacts he had made in the jazz world, looking for adventurous musicians willing to take on the task of playing a genre of music normally relegated to turntables. Soon he had enlisted trumpet player Nick Noonan, who was exploring sonic alterations of his instrument. Guitarist Mike Malaker followed, laying the harmonic foundation and contributing a combination of jazz, funk and rock sensibilities. To complete the band, Nilson recruited J. Witzgall, a pianist turned drum & bass producer, to help with production and the running of beats via laptop during live band sessions. The band was now fully formed but progress was slow as would be expected for musicians attempting to play music that is normally crafted in a studio, not played live for audiences. After several months, the group began to hit its stride and writing and collaboration became more natural. Soon the group was gigging in KC playing venues like the Foundation, Beaumont Club, Czar Bar, and Scion Lab. Mixed Method was equally at home playing along side local funk and jazz bands in more traditional shows as it was sharing the stage with DJs and working the crowd at a rave. Mixed Method finished their first recording, a self titled EP, in October of 09, and after playing a solid schedule in that month, will take a few months off to reinvent themselves.
